Harsh Agarwal I have been shouting this from the top of my roof for so long so I better say it here too:

Babe, Terror would have a Burialesque reputation if he was born in Western Europe or America. It's an absolute travesty that major music publications wouldn't put any light on this truly groundbreaking music. It is complex beyond anything I have ever heard. If you haven't come across his music before you need to dig into his discography, now!

lucasstamford After Horizogon’s somber monumental vibes, followed by the haunting Birmania (a spectacular release as "Zpell Hologos"), both showing a body of work increasingly complex, I’ve been wondering what could even come next.
What really amazes me in Babe, Terror’s music (and very much true for this album) is that his groundbreaking audacity never lacks tender spontaneity. It's music grounded in such a radical pursuit of technical greatness yet deeply emotional in the highest sense. That's true elegance Favorite track: Casa das Canoagens.

Story & Interview:

"Claudio Katz Szynkier is a producer and composer from São Paulo. He has a considerable history in electronic and experimental music under the moniker Babe, Terror (also uses the name Zpell Hologos). A language shaper, he has released some fundamental albums for recent experimental and electronic music, in Brazil and globally. 2020's Horizogon, an experiment in multi-orchestras, strangely tainted instrumentations, a puzzle piece of electrosymphonic jazz, was chosen by The Guardian as one of the best global albums of the year
www.theguardian.com/music/2020/dec/23/the-10-best-global-albums-of-2020 , and discussed in a very deep and revealing Pitchfork article pitchfork.com/features/overtones/climate-change-music/ . Before that, in the same Guardian, there was a substantal piece on the album theguardian.com/music/2020/aug/28/babe-terror-horizogon-review?CMP=twt_a-culture_b-gdnculture

Babe, Terror albums has declared admirers Four Tet (with whom Claudio has an EP, in which Four Tet reworks the Babe,Terror piece Summertime Our League babeterror.bandcamp.com/album/summertime-our-league-ep-2010), Prins Thomas, Caetano Veloso, Daniel Avery (with whom Claudio shares en EP) the guys from Ride (Claudio has a participation in a recent Japanese album edition of theirs, with a kind of electronic suite of 25 minutes, composed by him with Babe, Terror sounds and Ride tapes). Fadechase Marathon, 2018's album, was chosen by Bandcamp as one of the best electronic releases of that year daily.bandcamp.com/best-of-2018/bandcamp-best-electronic-albums-of-2018

Teghnojoyg is the result of a 2 years process of composition and debugging. "From my point of view, it's an orchestral and intimate celebration of buried, bewitched sounds, rotten machines in the process of semi-organic disappearance and disintegration. There's a decaying junkyard magnetic force in the East and North sides of São Paulo, specially North, a complex, mountainous strange residential territory, that lives between samba, the local militia and the culture of Bingo game houses. A vast space -—Brasilândia, Lauzane, Imirim are some neighborhoods-— in which some kind of delicious and strange cultural communion occurred 40 years ago, at least I can imagine that. I think the new album took some rotten car liquids and poison and it generated some futuristic reflection on possible urban communities of the past", says Claudio.

Horizogon was a reflection of dystopian Brazil captured almost psychically before and simultaneously with Covid19. On the new self-released album Teghnojoyg, the relationship between music and the pandemic, between art and a country in strange collapse, comes across differently, but it hasn't been lost. "At the time of Horizogon, in 2020, I was suffering from a severe ear problem, and I didn't know if I would be able to release another album, or even composing again. I still have some limitations, but I think the pandemic has given me armor, a sense of life or death, and I haven't stopped composing since then. Covid19 brought me grief. But it brought grief to everyone in Brazil. Covid introduced or accelerated the Alzheimer's of a dear person, a very dear and close person, and this suffering and this trauma did not go away. In a way, the album is very much about memory and forgetting, and about facing that trauma. We left, in the country, a neo-fascist ultracapitalist situation, which caused a statistical anomaly in Covid19 counts. Brazil has 4% of the world's population and has 11% or maybe even 15% of those killed and with sequels. It's monstrous. But no one knows for sure because the previous government made up the calculations. Pathological capitalism, which is the Bolsonaro government very meaning, does that. We moved from that to another situation, with Lula, a much better situation. But the traumas need to be faced. And we're not doing that. Covid19 and fascist criminals need to be put on trial. And we're not doing that. I believe that my search for old parties, for Brazilian sceneries and old semi-luminous spots, is a a hidden place, but also remote way of visiting the past as a living thing, recreating it as a new stunning body. And also a way to dive and share something of this mind-blowing river, a stream of charmed currents under spell and disturbing pacifications, this river that passes through times that is the Alzhmeimer, and other dementias", he formulates.

And continues. "The songs and videos are radically integrated. All these works, the videos and the songs, are flooded by the idea of time, memory and the travel through times and memories, not with a desire to return, but with a sense of enigma. The track Casa das Canoagens, which is somewhat reminiscent of the Horizogon album, is, in a very specific way, some kind of portal. One that I try to open, to cross a traumatic world of the Brazilian Covid and, who knows, access another world, experiencing, without fear, the funereal sense that remained like living lava in many of us, untombed in many of us. I would like to invite many people to the same path".

Teghnojoyg sounds, at times, like a ghost train in an abandoned carnival, breaking the thin film that separates the oneiric from the material world. For Claudio, Brazil itself is a territory that incessantly produces dead bodies, ghosts and the silences from these corps. "I make music for the lost stories of my place, in a way. I make the music of muffling happenings and rediscoveries. I'm trying to do it. There are many stories composing this place, buried stories, and in a way my music, what I'm looking for at least, is about switching on an oil probe in the abstract layers of this country that exists and doesn't exist. On Teghnojoyg, I think of the parties in the Northside of São Paulo in the 80s, parties on the outskirts, about which sometimes you see sixty-year-old fellas talking at grimy bar tables around. Parties in neighborhood houses. Parties with amateur DJs experimenting with record players and dancing instincts, using acetates and cheap 7"s bought in the city's old downtown. And I mix it with some Baltimore, Detroit, Kingston, Chicago feel of other muffled pasts. I think I tried to create secret celebrations in the abstract fabric of the city. São Paulo in its working-class suburbs is a place, like Kingston and Baltimore, where the black body is predominant. As in most of Brazil. But there is a constant effort by the Brazilian cultural elite, which is made up of white European landowners, to remove the black body from the country's imagination, or cynically fetishize it. I go to Kingston, Detroit, Baltimore, to visit these neighborhood parties and, in the unpredictable conjunction of those bodies with the black people of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, I think I create a contamination, a recombination of those presences, which is, I think, the very opposite of the fetishism".

And then there are the other stories haunting Teghnojoyg's compositions. "In 1987, around 40 people from different parts of Brazil got together and formed a community close to a stream of the enormous São Francisco river, in the deep Brazilian Northeast inland. It was the time of the redemocratization of Brazil, the end of the military dictatorship. A dictatorship that in fact was never completely interrupted in its yearnings.

In 1937, 50 years before, an informed "leper colony" operated in the very same place, without State supervision. Lower class people with "leprosy", or Hansen Disease, were taken to this colonial farm and remained there isolated for years. As the region was governed by rural militias, landowners, and not by the Brazilian State, nothing was ever done for these people, until a doctor, son of a powerful local family, went there clandestinely, did some tests and came across an important finding. He deciphered that it wasn't Hansen Disease they suffered with, it was something else. A stretch of river with a high incidence of mining had polluted the water, and that water generated symptoms similar to those of Hansen Disease. Back to 1987, that community that settled there was made up of heterosexual couples and their children, a few men and women gay couples. They used to have some kind of neohippie weird parties mixed with some new age, theatrical religious content. In nearby villages, rumors began to spread that those people had AIDS, and that the children were from nearby towns, not theirs, they were "stolen children". Some residents maintained contacts by letter with family members in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro. The letters stopped. Relatives contacted someone to go there and find out what had happened. Upon arrival, those people from the community were no longer there, with two rustic buildings completely ruined in the area of the farm where they used to have their house".

The videos intertwine many images of house parties in low middle-class suburbs in 1995, walk through the rural interior of Brazil in 1987, meet garage teen band concerts in 1989. Is there an air of nostalgia? "As I said, there is no such thing as nostalgia. The thing you'll find in the videos is the recomposition of times, which are dammed volcanic lava, and the very return of time to something that I like to think is its invented peak. I've never been to those parties, I wouldn't be there, but I decided to add them to the laval mystery that I tried to build as music. Or they, those archives, decided for me".

The political climate, with constant threats of a coup and a new fascist elected dictatorship, even after the victory of left-wing candidate Lula, remains a hidden but strong presence in Claudio Katz Szynkier's music. "I think that the true dictatorship, and this is the seed of fascism in Brazil, planted before the 1964 military regime, is the dictatorship of slavery in the depths of insensitivity. Life as a productive prison. A prison that takes place in the corporate androidization, in the systematization of the experiences of existence according to the possibility of consumption or profit that they provide. Dictatorship is slavery, and slavery is profitability as the maximum aspect of average life. Dictatorship is the fact that the great oligarchs can, almost without opposing voices, finance a system of inequality and semi-slavery, because that is what work in Brazil is: semi-slavery. That said, and perhaps based on the affliction caused by vectors in this context, there was an atrocious, terrible disease in Brazil, from which many suffered, many were victims and, at the same time, parts of it. I myself suffered and was a part of it. I was, at one time, a walking, sick mess, full of poisoned thoughts in my head, and I uttered them like a sick person in a zombie apocalypse releases his fluids around. But it is important to understand that there is no history of places without collective cohesion, an unconscious participatory process of complex exchanges, which take place in a complex way. The Brazilian illness happened like that. A kind of coordinated structure of brutal phenomena led people, and I was one of them, to fall ill in many ways: physical and metaphysical. Somehow we started to come out of that process. And in a way it has intensified, because the motto of Brazil is fear and despair on the one hand, and the cynicism and patrimonial arrogance of the richest people and their mobsters on the other. Brazil, itself founded and commanded yet today by a predatory and pathological, exploiter elite, is a geocosmical disease that escapes detection tests. But, in me, it's a chronic disease that behaves, in turn, making possible a laboratory of small cures. I have been almost dying, and I have been almost living, almost ever, and then I have been coming back to treatment, in various ways."

There is in Teghnojoyg a general feeling of travelling to years that are earlier but not quite exact. "My music, in a way, is my style of talking about the exuberances, secrets and catastrophes of a secret Brazil, an yet to be discovered country. It is a way of giving musical flesh to the possible encounter between neighborhoods, here and in the rest of the world, between this and the rest of times. It is a way of linking particular geographies and moments of difficult encounter in the same artificial mountain range. This homely, abstract and amateur basement disco meeting machine that lives in Teghnojoyg is a kind of broken archaeological probe. A misleading, scrapped but energetic mechanism, as far as I can feel, to trip beyond the visible. These connections are a new enigma to be injected into this imageless Brazil's imagery museum. From enigma to enigma, I forget my burdens. The enigma for me is the creative force, the abyssal matrix of all the beauties that are about to happen. Music for me is something that is always about to happen. The land of the lived and revealed enigmas. I'm lost in the streets and fields there"

(piece written in May 2023).
