One of the best electronic artists of 2018 according to Bandcamp, brazilian Babe, Terror returns with apocalypse opus and a tribute to his quarantined twilightish town
-Artist created lo-fi jazz-symphony for a besieged nocturnal São Paulo in 2019, before quarantine or COVID19
-'Horizogon', which marks the return of the artist admired by names like Ride, Four Tet, Prins Thomas and Daniel Avery, is being released as a multimedia project with 6 short films
-With the material, Babe, Terror made a feature film, joining videos from the 6 songs on the album, which shows the beginning of Coronavirus escalation and quarantine in the silent São Paulo.

Babe, Terror is an artist who started recording at home his unique lo-fi mix in 2008. He is a veteran composer residing in São Paulo, Brazil, now the COVID-19 proliferation epicenter town, and this new album, his 11th, "Horizogon", has been conceived and crafted after a serious health crisis in 2019. The six-pieces album comes 2 years after a 25-minute opus placed in the Japanese version of "Weather Diaries" www.discogs.com/Ride-Weather-Diaries/release/10447152, by the british legend Ride; one year after being acclaimed as as one of the best electronic artists of 2018 by Bandcamp, with the album "Fadechase Marathon". Some of Claudio Szynkier’s (the name behind Babe, Terror) pieces are still bewildering today, adored in small underground music circles, like the 2017 nautical epic "Ancient M'ocean", released with english label Phantasy Sound (Daniel Avery, Erol Alkan etc).

"Horizogon" is an independent online release and there is no way to know if there will be others and how other Babe, Terror’s works will be made, which is why there was intense dedication to do this one. "I have an autoimmune syndrome that affects my ear, causing varied dysfunctions, sounds, pain and dizziness, hearing has better and worse periods. Last year, when things got a little better, I sank in the Horizogon tracks building, trying to capture as many possibilities as possible. I don't know when I'll be able to release a new album, if I will be able to craft like this again, because to preserve my hearing I can't put so much effort and pressure into this kind of confection". "It needs a lot to really make a record, I've tried to take advantage of the right moments to do this... Maybe it's one of the reasons why the record sounds cryptic and dawnish, twilightish. I've lived a kind of internal apocalypse, and I had not much more than the open city at dawn to save me. I composed the music and thought of it as a soundtrack from an apocalyptic São Paulo, but a calm and utopian apocalypse... Thought of a new post-end São Paulo too... One in which many people died, but there were the parks, and the vagrants and beggars, who for me are and always have been the true owners of the city, have remained. The fact COVID-19 has striked some months after is a strange coincidence. It sounds like a weird dream, I don't know what to say about it", Claudio explains.

Launching the album now was a bit of quarantine decision, but not entirely. "would release anyway, I have scheduled 2020 spring with the label. I don't know, but I think it is coherent launching during the COVID-19 infestation and quarantine, in a very dark mood, because that was where I was mentally in 2019. It affected me a lot, and it is affecting me now, the COVID situation too. I feel not like a prophet of any kind, but like a dreamer, who had one of his dreams strangely materialized. It's an album of empty parks and a kind of conversation with the walking beggars, which is where and how I feel too. And it's how a lot of people feel now, walking around the city that is completely deserted".

Claudio's quarantine started just after another kind of seclusion, from which he expected to be released, but then COVID-19 has really started in São Paulo. "I was at the beach, Guaruja, healing yet from the ear condition, since the climate and air are good for me, and I had suddenly to get back to my place in São Paulo. There are some beach pictures, my last days of peace , between 2 huge crisis. But it's Ok. I'm asthmatic, but I hope I won't die, I really think I won't. Don't escape the quarantine so much, but if you are going to do that, take my São Paulo with you, travel with it at dawn, hidden from one silent, nocturne street to another", he suggests.

New album production involved many tools and techniques, and this is easy to see when listening. The record has a cinematic feel, which Babe, Terror does not deny. "I used a lot of instruments, bass, piano, an orchestral melter that I designed myself and a delay, old keyboards and primitive samplers. The album follows the composition idea of the 25-minute track that I did for Ride, which they put on Japanese edition of Weather Diaries in 2018, but it's different... It's a somewhat similar composition scheme, but I don't think I've ever done anything like it... A friend of mine said it sounds like a lost vinyl from some obscure Swedish jazz musicians recording American cinema music in the 80s, and nobody paid any attention to it, I think it has that feel maybe, and it has an inspiration from the parks in São Paulo, mainly Villa-Lobos and Burle Marx, which are now closed and nobody knows if both will open again sometime this year. I've filmed these places a lot for a cinema work that I am also conceiving, and there will be images of these parks in the videos for "Horizogon". You feel the cinematic, the jazz but it is electronic music, it still is. It is definitely electronic music, and it is certainly me looking for several ways to achieve a peculiar expansion that an essential sound form can open".

For the album, Claudio directed and produced a video for each piece on "Horizogon". The videos look like parts of a single film, with frightening and immersive footage of São Paulo's deserted dawn, of abandoned and seemingly dangerous spots, with men working in public maintenance. There is also a carnavalesque nostalgia in each one."I want to release all 6, each one for a different theme, on the day the album is released on Bandcamp and other online stores and streaming platforms. There will be a cassette release as well, later I think, and the film release itself, with some extra footage. The videos have machinery from São Paulo before stopping, but funny that it already seems to be petrified, a stopped city, on the videos. There are gardens, our urban protofascist monuments and totems too, constructions that in the visual and cinema world gain a kind of cure, and there is the carnival, our Mardi Gras, in various presences, mostly old presences, reprocessed by myself... There are the old parades, the barracks of the samba schools, which configure the core of the world of carnival, preparing the paulistan (São Paulo's) Carnaval Parade of 2019, weeks before isolation. It has the weird and poetic avenues of São Paulo, which is a city of the apocalypse itself. There is a lot of stuff in the international airport, Cumbica, one day before quarantine began. I filmed it alone and my girlfriend contributed with airplane material. I wanted to make them, these films, as recipients of the songs, existences that talked to the songs, different from them, but possessed a similar density and the same texture in some ways", says Babe, Terror’s mastermind.

"Horizogon" has an orchestral-jazz, but also a religious, maybe sacred feel. It sometimes sounds like an ecumenical crossbreeding achievement. "I think that the core of the album has an idea of a Brazil-Usa-Africa unity, although without beats, which is subtle, but very strong for me. It is an idea of Brazil of the future that finds these other continents. While the city ends, a new forest is born in around these leftover inhabitants. The cathedral becomes something else, another building, a shelter, and it also turns into a studio, and around this studio there grows forests, gardens, and the sound that is made with the instruments that are out there is this idea of a magical re-growth that brings together the three black elements: the American jazz and chorus, the Brazilian phantom, the enchanted life and climate driving and fueling the feel of some of the orchestras and pianos, and the African, which is the strange, the unknown itself, the familiar but unfamiliar, and is the matrix of this reforestation".

Brazilian political climate is unique now, with the far-right neofascism dominating media and thoughts. Brazil is the epicenter of a worldwide authoritarian revival. Economic power and local governments have tried to stop the COVID-19 isolation, for the benefit of the capitalist agenda. Babe, Terror, a contrast figure in the Brazilian political mutation, sees the future with some hope."This was already an apocalyptic moment in Brazil, the moment of uncovered authoritarianism, unveiled and official nationalism, before COVID-19 quarantine, to the point where you walk on a street, go to the supermarket and people really feel free to attack whomever they consider 'bearded vagabonds' and 'communists'. And that was definitely fuel for the record and is inspiring in an oblique way. I am a socialist progressive jew and some people marked me in Brazil for some pieces that I wrote about the neofascist, Bannontrumpinspired "culture". I have been target of hordes of virtual robots, lies and everything else that can be to imagine. My money ran out, lost a few key jobs, and some of my friends made a "Crowdfunding against authoritarianism", so I could film and edit my "Horizogon" videos. But it made the record more alive", Claudio told.

But why "Horizogon"? "I don't know for sure. I ride a lot, I love bikes, and this one sounds like an invented, new designed bicycle part, something that I've made myself. A new thing, for example, a new type of suspension, but it is also a monument. New São Paulo after authoritarianism fever, after Coronavirus, without so many buildings, with 60's buildings reborning, some demolition too (demolition always brings some kind of beauty), and this large piece of urbanistic art in the middle of a park can be seen illuminated at night and many kilometers away. Maybe this is Horizogon. Horizogon is, also, maybe the game that the machine printed on the cover, turned off by the apocalypse, ran. Or a planet, a new São Paulo as a new urban place with more respectful humanity, the city reincarnating more beautiful, I have a lot of hope. Horizogon is the new old town. It's apocalypse algebraic, architectural poetry".
